With the exception of blood transfusion, cornea transplanatation is the most successful tissue transplantation helped by the fact that the cornea is avascular. The first penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) was performed by Zirm in 1905. However, PKP did not become popular until the 1930s when Filatov in Odessa, Russia, advocated the use of cadaveric donors. The use of refrigerated donor eyes was expanded by the organization of eye banks. The availability of preservation media, especially with the development of McCarey-Kaufman media in 1974 , allowing for the maintenance of the donor cornea further increases the popularity of cornea graft. |
