(How many kinds of messages can the eye convey? A psychologist once suggested 15 spectra, in addition to interest: trouble and calm, tenderness and callousness, certainty and uncertainty, reflection and thoughtlessness, seriousness and play, sadness and happiness, attention and inattention, dominance and submission, friendliness and hostility, desire and hate, trust and distrust, alertness and fatigue, falseness and sincerity, surprise and knowledge, and anger and forgiveness.
Indeed, eyes are so evocative that in literature they become home for mind-states that otherwise thwart description.

Can you answer the following ophthalmic questions relating to literature?)

Who wrote " in the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is King"?

 In Balzac's short story "The Elixir of Long Life". What happened to the eye of the dead man when his 
         son applied a magic potion over it?

Who mused that "The soul, fortunately, has an interpreter -- often an unconscious but still a faithful
